Das „große Zauberwort der Zeit“. Reichtumskonflikte im 19. Jahrhundert

Abstract:

Die Entstehung großer Vermögen im Zuge der Industrialisierung hat die gesamtgesellschaftlichen Ungleichheitsrelationen tiefgreifend verändert. Man kann die Geschichte des Reichtums daher nicht nur als Geschichte sozialer Aufstiegsprozesse, eines wachsenden öffentlichen Interesses am Thema Reichtum und der Durchsetzung eines zukunftsoptimistischen Leitbilds erzählen, das neben den individuellen Chancen zugleich den gesellschaftlichen Nutzen solcher Wohlstandsgewinne postulierte. Reichtum lässt sich in der Gegenperspektive aber auch als prekäre, stark legitimationsbedürftige Sozialfigur analysieren, deren Bedeutungsgewinn etablierte Sozialordnungen in vielfältiger Hinsicht herausforderte und die Neuverhandlung ungleichheitsbezogener Normen erforderlich machte. Der Vortrag analysiert solche Normkonflikte und fragt nach Veränderungen in der gesellschaftlichen Akzeptanz von Reichtum.

The “great magic word of the age”. Conflicts about Wealth in the 19th century

The production of great fortunes by the industrial revolution profoundly changed overall levels of social inequality. Therefore one cannot portray the history of wealth solely as the history of processes furthering upwards social mobility, of a growing public interest in the theme of wealth and the emergence of optimistic visions concerning the future, which popularized individual success in addition to the societal benefits of growing prosperity. By contrast, wealth can be seen as a precarious social figure, that was badly in need of legitimation, whose rising importance challenged established social orders, and necessitated the renegotiation of existing norms concerning inequality. This paper addresses such normative conflicts, and examines changes in the societal acceptance of wealth.
