Abstract:

Vor dem Hintergrund methodischer Debatten zum material turn verfolgt der Beitrag die Zirkulation von Gütern im Kontext venezianischer Levante-Politik in der Renaissance. Zugleich wird nach den personalen Verflechtungen und dem Wissenstransfer gefragt, die damit verbunden waren.
Diese Überlegungen zu einer Geschichte der materiellen Kultur und der kulturellen Verflechtung im Mittelmeerraum um 1500 führen schließlich zur Frage nach der historiographischen Konstruktion von Renaissance im Kontext post-kolonialer und globalhistorischer Reflexionen.

Cairo by night. Venice, the Levant and the circulation of things in the Renaissance

Against the background of methodical debates on the material turn, this paper traces the circulation of goods in the context of Venetian policies toward the Levant during the Renaissance. It will also inquire about the personal interrelations and transfer of knowledge involved.
Finally, these considerations of the history of material culture and cultural entanglement in the Mediterranean around 1500 lead to the question of the historiographical construction of the Renaissance in the context of post-colonial and global history reflections.
