Between Local Roots and Global Changes. The Evolving Identity of the Jews of Tunis during the Late Ottoman Period

NORA LAFI (Berlin)

Abstract:

English Version:

In late Ottoman Aleppo, the position of members of confessional communities was more complex than ever, and the identity of every single member of such communities was marked by a variety of facets. Jews were torn between the logic of their imperial Ottoman integration, the one of the reform of the imperial system, and new trends, pertaining to consular protection, migration and to the growth of new definitions of communal belongings.
The aim of this presentation is to analyze the evolution of the position of Jews as cultural brokers in this highly unstable context. As the emergence of a new world required new positionings, Jews became increasingly both the objects and the actors of new debates and conflicts. New tensions also emerged, sometimes resulting in episodes of violence. But Jews also continued to expand their networks of Mediterranean and international trade, and to adapt them to this changing world. This is why this presentation will insist on two main aspects: Jews as brokers in the evolution of mercantile cultures between international horizons and the local scale and Jews as actors of new debates in the press and on the technical, industrial, intellectual, political and cultural scenes. In focussing on the role of such figures that played an instrumental part in the invention of an Ottoman form of modernity, but also reflect the severe limits of this configuration, the aim is to propose a reflection on the evolution of the very position of Jews in late-Ottoman urban societies.
