The ecological movement and internationalism

Referent/in: Franz-Josef Brüggemeier

Abstract:
Movements which seek to protect the natural environment and protest against the destruction of that environment span the entire twentieth century. Politically, they range from the extreme right to the extreme left. They could be nationalist and inward-looking in their argumentation and outlook, or they could be cosmopolitan and internationalist. This paper will make use of selected case studies to ask what factors contributed to and hindered internationalism within the ecological movement. It will explore the question in how far internationalism connected to shared norms and values, e.g. the critique of modernity or industrial society or economic growth.
