Peace Movements and Internationalism

Referent/in: Holger Nehring

Abstract:
This paper traces the variations of internationalism within European peace movements. Rather than assuming that transnational relations mattered per se, it treats ‘internationalism’ and ‘transnationalism’ as projects that need to be historicised. It is thus that we come to a better understanding of the ways in which the nation state continued to frame transnational networks – and how transnational networks influenced national political debates about peace. Such an approach also helps to historicise moments of internationalism in twentieth-century European history.
