49. Deutscher Historikertag 2012: Ressourcen - Konflikte

Introduction: Research traditions and questions for the Round-Table

Referent/in: Dieter Schott (Darmstadt)

Abstract:
Over the whole history of urban civilization the undisturbed and secure provision of cities with basal resources such as food, water, energy and furthermore with raw materials indispensable for industrial production, was of decisive importance. In the light of imperatives for sustainable development of Agenda 21, the dependence of cities on resources which are frequently acquired on a global scale is increasingly problematized. The introduction by the chair will summarize the general purpose of the Round-Table and highlight the most important questions and problems to be addressed. After a short survey of historiographical approaches towards the problem of urban resources in earlier scholarship the participants of the Round-Table will be presented with their specific fields of expertise.
