Abstract:
A panel discussion jointly organised by the German Historical Institute London and the Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research.
This panel discussion will look at contemporary textbook controversies focusing the issue of an adequate representation of ethnic, regional or religious minorities or lower casts in text books. At the same time and intertwined with many of these issues, the panel will discuss the problems arising in this context from a critical historical assessment of the validity of many regional – frequently oral – traditions and/or religious texts. The panel will include examples of recent textbook controversies from Australia, Europe and India.
