Values education in history lessons?!

Abstract

As soon as students are asked to issue a value judgement assessing some phenomenon during lessons, they naturally refer back to their individual moral values and standards. Curricula and educational laws, however, refer to those values and standards laid down in the German Basic Law and expect students to relate to them, regarding them as indisputable in themselves. But what happens when students´ everyday realities and experiences are not in accord with the constitution´s values or do even compete with them? How can teachers react to such a situation? Which alternatives can be provided for the non-formal educational sector for history by players in the field? Which values should and can be conveyed in modern history lessons and in history education in general in order to face the problem of “Split societies“? What exactly makes specific features of a value judgement and which task types can support them so that students can be specifically trained in that field? These are the aspects addressed in our presentations.
