SUMMARY:[Historikertag 2018] Separate Ways. A history of emotions of current separatist movements in Europe: Catalonia, Scotland, South Tyrol and Kosovo
DESCRIPTION:Current nationalisms form strong communities but divide societies. This can be seen in the seating arrangements in parliament, in the struggle for hegemony in streets, intonated songs, flags and in divergent national narratives. This dynamic is symptomatic of the secessionist movements that have recently taken place in Catalonia, Scotland, South Tyrol and the Balkans. These movements shift fracture lines and mark new borders. Political conflicts between “right-wing” and “left-wing”, rich and poor, step back from the new conflict between opponents and advocates of independence. The latter do not include right-wing extremists, but middle-class citizens or left-wingers of all age groups, who sometimes seem to be prepared to postpone their rational-economic benefit calculation for national independence. This makes it all the more important to trace the relevance of emotional factors in the propagation of a nationalistic habitus. Firstly, the contributions will ask which longer-term dispositions, which medium-term effective actions and which situational events must come together in order to produce the “moment of separatism” in which the struggle for independence reaches its climax. Secondly, the question of which institutional (language policy, among others), discursive (especially historical narratives) and performative means played a role in creating a specific national “emotional community”. Thirdly, we need to shed light on the national and international political network of relations in which regional nationalism is developing. Finally, we should discuss whether the different independent movements followed similar emotional/rational patterns or developed in a specific national or regional way.
