SUMMARY:[Historikertag 2018] Health inequity – despite open societies? (1949-2018)
DESCRIPTION:The promise of protection against the social and economic risks of illness, occupational accidents, inability to work, old age, dependency on care etc. through social security has been one of the mainstays of social cohesion. Since after the war, health has become an increasingly important factor in the public discourse. The efficiency of one’s own healthcare provision was seen as strong evidence of superiority in the competing systems of East and West Germany. Especially since 1990, social inequality has become a topic that is again, and more explicitly, articulated.
The session aims to illustrate that health inequities are a fundamental aspect of social division. The highly personal as well as family-, group-, and class-specific experience of health inequity is very instructive.
As a way of bringing together individual experience and the level of social systems with a view to “biopolitics”, the chosen approach will focus primarily on the specific effects of health inequity in individuals that are addressed as groups or collectives. These have been (socio-) politically defined and analyzed according to the following five categories: nationality, gender, ‘class’, ‘disability’ and migration. The extent to which each of them can have an influence on health disparity is to be examined.
Greater thematic coherence is sought by restricting the examination to German-speaking countries. The concluding intersectional considerations will aim to assess more precisely the connection between the social and cultural construction of these collective subjects with their health experiences and the effects of social inequality.
