Bellum civile and political communication in Late Republican Rome DESCRIPTION:The civil wars of the first century BCE disrupted Roman society, which in turn was a major cause of the destabilization of the political system. This has of course long been recognized in historical research on the bella civilia. The cultural dimension of the disintegration of the res publica, however, demands equal attention. The section aims for an analysis of the more implicit, yet fundamental effects which the increasingly militarized conflict had on Roman society. Our starting point is the assumption that the radical dynamic and inbound brutality constituted a completely new experience for contemporaries. As a consequence of the specific character of the Roman republic’s socio-political system as well as its elite there were no pre-existing analytical or interpretative models for handling the trauma of continued civic bloodshed with its escalating violence. In order to find a solution for this problem Romans of the late Republican and early Imperial period devised multiple strategies which allowed them to understand and cope with the new phenomenon of civil war. While, on the one hand, Roman society turned to the narrative patterns developed by the Greeks who were accustomed to civil conflict for centuries, the bella civilia also influenced many other aspects of cultural life. The latent and deep-rooted fear of permanent civil strife thus became a source of innovation on multiple levels which (re-)shaped Roman collective imaginary to a high degree. In our view the resulting structures and developments constituted a highly elaborate and comprehensive “culture of civil war”. Der Beitrag A Culture of Civil War.
