Current Challenges of Writing European History DESCRIPTION:Ten to fifteen years ago, “Europeanizing Contemporary Histories” was an oft-voiced and at the time largely consensual vision for the future. But within the last decade things have taken a different turn: on the one hand we see only a very limited “Europeanization”, as European historiographies on many periods and topics within contemporary history tend to remain relatively unconnected. At the same time, the apparent consensus to “europeanize” historiography has eroded: the surge of interest in extra-European and global history as well as related calls to “provincialize” Europe seem to put the project of writing European history on the defensive. What does this imply for the future of “European history” as a field of research? In which ways has the writing of „European history” developed within the last decade – both within Germany and in other European countries – and where is it supposed to head in the near future? How do we define its position between national historiographies on the one and global history on the other side? What – if any – are its specific contributions to understanding the past? These are the questions the panel hopes to address, using the challenge of the global as a stimulus to open a necessary debate. Der Beitrag Why Europe – which Europe?
