The Section raises the question if, notwithstanding all supposed similarities, still we observe exclusion concepts which are fundamentally different from each other and may immediately be connected to the different overall constellations of each society. After all, it is about the historicisation of a timeless phenomenon, however also about working out a new view at the relation of the pre-modern age and the modern age. It seems as if often quite similar motivations are crucial for recognizing an individual or a group as part of a society. Thus, inclusion and exclusion criteria may be considered two sides of the same coin, so that each inclusion concept at the same time also generates ways of exclusion. However, it seems as if precisely in pre-modern society, which was based on associations and estates, exclusion happened differently from the modern age which was based on the division of labour. In this context it is crucial to differentiate between marginalisation and exclusion. If the former means reduced participation in social processes, exclusion means the radical interruption of communication between the excluded individual/group and society. Exclusion may be motivated by a perception of deviance or otherness, however even by illness (lepers). It is conspicuous that the pre-modern age does not only consider exclusion unproblematic but – such as in the legal sphere – explicitly allows for exclusion, whereas the modern age knows a broad debate on considering exclusion barbarism or a rupture of civilisation. Thus, there is the question of what these different assessments mean for the ideas of social and political order and the culture of the respective societies.
