Southern Europe since 1945 DESCRIPTION:According to numerous social scientists and historians, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Greece belong to a common structural area “Southern Europe”. The historical development of this area and its relations with other European regions since the mid-20th century seem to be a story of progress and decline. Until the 1970s, these countries were characterized by underdevelopment and widespread poverty. In the late 1990s, they caught up economically to their richer neighbours and, also thanks to the democratization processes in Spain, Portugal and Greece, became politically a part of the European community of values. With the European debt crisis, a new division between North and South emerged, which was justified not only by structural or economic gaps, but also by old culturalist stereotypes. These dynamics of convergence and difference let the Southern European countries appear as losers of our time, even though they are in a better economic and social condition than other EU member states. Based on the discursive and structural differences between European areas, this section inquires into the significance of Southern Europe as a historical region of contemporary history. The main argument is that the perception of Southern Europe as a homogeneous space is misleading. Rather, Portugal, Spain, Italy and Greece share specific historical developments related to centre-periphery dynamics within Western European history. The seemingly specific Southern European “Sonderweg” was an expression of a pan-European development, and the processes of integration were fostered by gaps and imbalances. From this perspective, the history of Southern Europe is not a special case, but an integral part of European history. Der Beitrag Losers of our time?
