DESCRIPTION:The long-term research project “Formulae – Litterae – Chartae“ of the Akademie der Wissenschaften in Hamburg, in cooperation with the University of Hamburg, is dedicated to a type of source that provides unique insight into the legal, social and everyday history of the Merovingian age. Studying early medieval formula collections leads to a variety of questions on the realities of everyday life in Merovingian society, a society marked by the transition from late antiquity to early middle ages and the migration of Frankish settlers into the gallo-roman space. Some of these questions, which revolve around institutional continuities, the plurality of the society and changes of values, will be discussed under the label “A divided society”? Chosen experts from various historical disciplines and different research traditions have been invited to discuss these questions (Prof. Dr. Philippe Depreux (Hamburg), Prof. Dr. Alexandre Jeannin (Dijon), Prof. Dr. Charles Mériaux (Lille), Dr. Elke Nieveler (Landesmuseum Bonn), Dr. Laury Sarti (Freiburg), Prof. Dr. Sebastian Scholz (Zürich)). Researchers from the Formulae-team (Dr. des. Horst Lößlein, Dr. des. Christoph Walther) will open the discussion by presenting selected formulae for each case. The experts will then give brief responses. Each section will conclude with an open discussion.
