The Ambiguities of National Identity Constructions in Nineteenth-Century Germany and Italy DESCRIPTION:Those who carefully examined the celebrations of the 150th birthday of Italy in 2010/11 and the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and German reunification in 2014/15 could make astonishing observations: myths and teleological master narratives, which were thought to be overcome long ago, reappeared in general public. Although historians have criticized e.g. the presentation of Verdi as a national Italian bard, or of the anti-Napoleonic wars as German wars of liberation, there remains a sharp discrepancy between professional historiography and public debate. However, in the second half of the 19th century historians eagerly argued for the national narratives established at the time with the aim of shaping national identity. These narratives were janus-faced from the beginning: on the one hand, they supported and often dictated the overcoming of differences; on the other hand, they deepened existing trenches and thus cemented the division of societies. The origins of today’s divided culture of memory lie in those political and regional rivalries born before and immediately after the foundation of the nation-states in Germany and Italy. Therefore, the section intends to discuss the variety of national mythologies and to revise the retrospectively drawn conclusions about the teleology of national unity and about nationalism as the sole legitimate integration ideology. The contributions do not seek to reproduce binational master narratives by telling parallel success stories. The seven internationally leading historians rather target the processes of society divisions north and south of the Alps critically and try to enlarge a deepened understanding of the problem into the present time. Last but not least because the 150th anniversary of the foundation of the German Empire in 2021 is not far away. Der Beitrag Divided Unity?
