Here, museums as institutions of public history find themselves confronted with the political demand to present heroic narratives of national pride. However, partisan politics of history in museums are not limited to these contexts. Plans for the Haus der Geschichte Österreichs in Vienna or the recently opened Haus der Geschichte im Museum Niederösterreich in St. Pölten also testify to attempts at political influence on the representation of history. At the same time, academic history writing is more and more geared toward global history as the effects of globalization become increasingly evident in everyday life. In light of these tendencies, a purely national framing of historical narratives has become less convincing – also in museums. One reaction is to globalize the scope of the museum as the Humboldt Forum in Berlin is currently attempting to do, aiming to become a museum of world cultures. Another reaction is to particularize historical narratives as reflected, for instance, in the United States with museums such as the National Museum of the American Indian or the National Museum of African American History and Culture, which opened in 2017. These museum projects also follow a political agenda. By tackling the four examples of Poland, Austria, Germany, and the United States, the panel discusses different forms of history politics in museums, which can be regarded both as signs of and reactions to societal and political frictions.
