Digital humanities are still closely linked to the provision of digitalized sources and to computer linguistics and computer sciences. In many cases, it stays uncertain in what way digital methods can help finding answers to historical questions. This epoch-spanning section aims directly at the concrete benefit of digital methods for historical sciences while keeping the motto of the Munster’s historians day “Divided Societies“ in the centre of the projects. In the first part of the session, the main focus is placed on digital possibilities of exploring persons, their networks as well as their sometimes broken career and life paths due to unequal societies or forced migration movements. Referring to methods, semantic web and linked data technologies, automatic procedures as OCR-analyses, Record Linkage and geographic information system (GIS) are used.  An epistemological question will be how a historical context can result from the multitude of individual data and which potentialities can be seen in (semi-)automated processes on examinations of life paths. The second part of the session pursues the digital analysis of discourses of and about societies being in upheaval. Concerning the methods, qualitative and quantitative text mining processes are employed. The epistemological challenge is lays in the gradual refinement of discourse fragments in a laboratory way while ignoring preconceived hermeneutic patterns. Visualization tools will play a central role in the presentation of results. The program has been determined by a call for papers.
