DESCRIPTION:Criminal, disrespectful and unhealthy – these were just some of the attributes used to describe migrants in various regions of the world at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. Some of these characterizations are still common nowadays. Our panel will focus on migrants’ attempts to resist such stigmatization. Taking colonial and metropolitan port cities as case studies, the panelists will describe minorities and their efforts to counter stereotyping and associated discriminatory practices. The presentations will discuss conflicts between different groups of migrants and the societies receiving them. The selected port cities in Europe, North America, Asia and Africa were important hubs of international trade, transportation, and migration at the turn of the century. They made visible not only the results of globalization processes but also the extent and limits of social openness in each of the cities. Internal migrants from rural areas as well as international and intra-imperial labor migrants became the target of negative projections with sometimes serious consequences. They felt the effects of negative stereotypes, and they also created their own room for maneuver to counter stereotyping and to test the limits of exclusion. By comparing geographically diverse case studies, the discussions will shed light on these discursive disputes and their consequences for the lives of minorities in port cities. Central for the panel will be questions about agency as well as race-, gender- and class-based differentiations.
