Occupation, Resistance, and Violence in the 20th Century DESCRIPTION:The current street unrest worldwide is spectacular. In its most radical form of intensification, protesters articulate their complaints and demands to a point that provokes the state and its authorities to declare a state of exception. However, the same can be said for the other side, for there is no doubt that measures implemented under the state of exception are used not only to pacify or calm a situation but may indeed instigate a spiral of escalation. This section examines the historical roots of such developments since the late nineteenth century. First, our presentations analyze the street as a space of violent resistance, as a stage for demonstrating (counteracting) order and (counteracting) power. Second, we concentrate on the time period of modern colonialism and ask in what way and with what effect states applied the political instrument of the state of exception in domestic conflicts, also outside of their colonies. Of particular interest here are, third, the use of martial law and its various forms of siege and the new security laws connected to the state of exception that had emerged since the First World War. Fourth, we analyze behavior during states of exception and the impact it had on the use of force. We suggest that strategies of both offensive and defensive street mobilization developed in a dialectical relationship to one another, and must be understood in terms of the state of exception. As a result of protests, street fighting, and public punitive rituals, certain “state of exception mentalities” ensued that then established themselves as habitual norms. These included forms of vigilantism as well as revolts against state and colonial power, police and military. Der Beitrag Streets in States of Emergency.
