[…] Those who possess the power to interpret history, directly exercise political influence” (Heinrich August Winkler). This fight over interpretative power is exemplified by the Hambach Festival of 1832 that is regarded as a milestone in the history of German democracy. The last attempt to reinterpret the historical event became apparent with the so-called “New Hambach Festival” in 2018/19, when the right-wing conservative organizers tried to present themselves as the true heirs of the original festival. Up to now historical research about the Hambach Festival and its legacy has mainly focused on the interpretations of the event during jubilees. In contrast to this, the section tries to develop a fresh take on the Hambach memory. The four presentations concentrate on Hambach castle as the place of the interpretative fightings, have a look at material aspects of the Hambach memory and discuss the various reinterpretations of the event in school books. How was the festival incorporated in the collective memory beyond jubilees and anniversary publications? How is it imparted to the public in past and present? Finally, the section tries to evaluate historically the current ambitions to gain the interpretative power over the event by the organizers of the “New Hambach Festival”.
