Dynastic change and strategies of legitimization in medieval Europe DESCRIPTION:Negotiations of political and social structures in times of transformation always are a struggle for political sovereignty. In our times, different kinds of new media are used for this purpose. In the Middle Ages, however, contemporary historiography reflected endeavors for political profiling. Back then just as nowadays, people struggled for interpretative authority particularly in border zones: On the one hand, the diplomatic, military and administrative marking of borders serves the purpose of asserting outwardly; on the other hand, this also unfolds a consolidating effect inwardly, namely when claims to power are marked both spatially and culturally. The opponents make use of material, personnel and cultural resources in order to legitimize their territorial claims and to make them plausible to the outside. In this way, they fight for territorial dominion, but also for the cultural interpretation of the regions concerned. In the Middle Ages, these mechanisms became manifest both at interreligious and territorial borders between Christian realms. Focusing on border regions, the section offers a comparative approach to phases of political transformation (e.g. dynastic changes) in the European Middle Age. The papers examine different aspects such as the significance of border regions for the establishment of new power structures and the conditions of legitimizing dominion in border zones. They also discuss cultural and institutional mediators as well as linguistic and material expressions of struggles for interpretative authority. The section considers medieval border regions as both places and objects of these struggles. It intends to discuss dynamics of political strive after power in transformative phases and spatial markings of dominion. Der Beitrag Discussing borders.
