SUMMARY:[Historikertag 2021] Spatial Conceptualizations and Regional Planning in Latin America (19th and 20th Century)
DESCRIPTION:Since the late 1980s, the spatial turn has encouraged the historical sciences to conceive of spatial entities not as given but to analyze the construction of geographical, political and social spaces instead. This section consists of five papers on Latin American history which follow this theoretical approach by looking into “the production of imagined and effective geopolitical entities” (Epple 2017). All papers focus on the state as the producer of these entities. The section is based on the premise that processes of nation-building in Latin America and imaginations of a Latin American unity were deeply intertwined with contested constructions of political, social and symbolical spaces since the early 19th century. By centering on different interpretations of historically constructed spaces and their disputed boundaries, we contribute to the conference theme of the 53rd Convention of German Historians, “conflicting interpretations”. In our period of investigation (1860s to 1960s) conflicting interpretations arose because the state and societal elites rarely appeared as homogenous actors. Also, spatial conceptualizations and planning projects by the state were often challenged by subaltern groups. Within the umbrella concept of space, we discuss two main research perspectives in our section: One group of papers will provide analyses of how the cultural space Latin America or individual Latin American states have been situated in larger imagined spatial entities, like the transatlantic, or the ‘West’. The second group of contributions considers the interior of nation-states and analyzes how the state extended its territorial control through infrastructure projects, and thereby ‘civilized’ regions that parts of the Latin American elites conceived of as ‘barbaric’.
