DESCRIPTION:In recent years, history has faced the enormous challenge of finding new ways to write about collectives. The constructive dimension of historical identities as “invented traditions” has been investigated thoroughly. The question of whether and how this “doing” can be methodically avoided, however, remains. An introduction and four talks dealing with theoretical reflections based on historical case studies explore the following questions: Firstly, the extent to which historical-critical analysis of the rhetorical strategies used to construct collective identities constitutes an effective antidote to identitarian objectifications. Secondly, whether a strategy of substituting the term “identity” with the notion of “we” is sufficient to avoid identitarian narrowing or whether the term “belonging” can be sharpened in such a way as to become a category of historical analysis that renders visible the historical, geographical and individual situatedness of identities rather than presupposes them. Thirdly, the degree to which discourses of identity or belonging are inevitable in historiographic plots and procedures, including those that deliberately emphasize plurality and heterogeneity. This leads to the fourth question, which asks how historians can research and write about collectives in the historical process without simultaneously producing identity offers. Fifthly, this poses the not unimportant question of whether historical scholarship can afford to eschew an offer of identity or belonging if it wants to claim social relevance.
