Challenges of Historical Knowledge Acquisition with Digital Sources and Methods DESCRIPTION:The section deals with new possibilities of interpretation through the use of digital methods and sources and treats the question how these relate to previous interpretations based on analogue methods. This will be demonstrated in two main areas: “Digital Sources and their Challenges” on the one hand and “Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and their Knowledge Potential for Historical Studies” on the other. The four lectures will discuss the epistemological challenges and methodological decisions faced by digital projects with regard to the use of their methods and the investigation of their sources, across epochs and topics. Furthermore, they will discuss which research questions and answers can thus be added to previous historical interpretations and how our previous interpretative frameworks can be expanded as a result. With the changed demands on source and methodological critique in the digital world, the section also takes up a current debate within the digital history and will present it for discussion to a wider audience of experts at the Historikertag.
