DESCRIPTION:Digital games are not only a product but also a producer of our culture. They play an active role in shaping popular cultural and political discourses and are, therefore, a valuable source for historians who try to understand how conflicting interpretations of the past are negotiated in society. Thus, digital games allow for a better understanding of discourse dynamics, social group formations and media trends. In this respect, especially games which employ a historical setting are of interest for historians.
The conceptions of history communicated and constructed in these games allow for far-reaching insights into for pop-cultural discourses about the past. Such imaginations of our past are however only loosely connected to a scientific historical debate and are more concerned with consumer’s expectations, the marketing logic of the game publishers and the “creative freedom” of developers. Consequently, historical digital games are valuable sources to question the medium’s influence on contemporary societal discussions on politics, ideology and entertainment.
In our section we will be focussing on one of the most crucial categories prominent in conflicting interpretations of the past: authenticity. Experts, so-called gamers and an interested general public often clash in fierce debates circling around the buzzword authenticity and in doing so point to a central question of our times: Which role can and should popular media play in historical culture?
