SUMMARY:[Historikertag 2021] 20th Century History Between ‘How’ and ‘Why’: A Debate
DESCRIPTION:The development of historiography in the last decades has been characterised by an increasing distance to a search for causes, and by an emphasis on the openness of history. Not last, the rise of cultural history contributed to this change of perspective. Historians came to focus on questions of ‘how’ rather than asking for the ‘why’. Taking note of this transformation, the American Historical Review in 2015 even featured a roundtable on “The Lost History of Causes”.
The sketched trend however does not imply a ‘death of causality’: Contingency and causality do not present binary oppositions, and there is no sharp line between narration and explanation. Historiography is characterised but multiple connections between both, by a range of hybrid forms. Causality and contingency stand in a productive tension to each other, and their relationship changes over time.
In our panel, we will focus on the implications of the sketched transformations for writing the history of the 20th century: How do historians today deal with causal assumptions, how with the challenge of history’s openness? What role do they ascribe to structures or a longue durée, how do they conceive of agency? What conceptions of time and space inform their writings and causal assumptions? And what are the consequences for our understanding of the 20th century? Our panel seeks to discuss such questions with regard to selected fields of 20th century history, which are or have come under intense debate in the last years. Panellists will give short talks, followed by a panel discussion on core questions and a larger discussion including the public.
