The authors treated extensive material that shows how divination became the scene of various conflicts between different cultures, social strata and experts. Methodologically speaking, the section analyses how the individual authors dealt with the subject in order to show what kind of circumstances led to the contestation of divination in the first place. Thereby, the respective events that will be the subject of historical analysis play a role in so far as they should illustrate the developments that led to conflicting divinatory interpretations – and how they contributed to the creation or contestations of expert knowledge.
