Although current developments are frequently interpreted as a “return of economic nationalism” and a “relapse” into bygone times, the postulated antagonism of (nation)states and a globalized economy written into these assessments is in need of critical assessment. Five case studies probe into the tension between global economic actors, states and issues of sovereignty from a historical perspective. Doing so, they reflect the problems of economic and political sovereignty in relation to emerging, consolidating, and transforming forms of statehood on the one hand, and to processes of globalization on the other.
