DESCRIPTION:In the years following the collapse of the SED-regime in 1989 and the rapid progress towards German unification the GDR was at the centre of public and academic historical debates. Dealing with the East German past took place within the special setting of the GDR’s accession to the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG). In this process it wasn’t only the state structures that were transferred. Along with the FRG’s political, academic and social institutions came a specific system of values with regard to the culture of remembrance. Among those who took part in the debates concerning the historical significance of the GDR in the context of German history were East German civil rights activists, historians from both the West and the East as well as West German representatives of Politics of Memory. The session is concerned with these debates, those involved as well as themes and conflicts, which were important for contemporary historical research during the 1990s and continue to have an impact today. It examines which actors determined topics of discourse. The underlying hypothesis assumes that East German agents had to adapt to the existing West German terms of discourse if they wanted to become a part of the institutionalized debate on GDR history. Contributions in each section are dedicated to different areas of activity concerning historical research and reappraisal. They aim to classify them with regard to their specific terms of discourse. Thus, they do not seek to continue the contemporary scholarly and historical-political debates. Instead, the goal is to historicize them and to examine them as a key issue of an emerging unified society.
