SUMMARY:[Historikertag 2021] Gender and Democracy: Contesting Patriarchy in Postwar West Germany
DESCRIPTION:Gender has not been a central category for contemporary historians in Germany, especially in the field of political history. In contrast, intersectional analysis is fundamental to our understanding of the history of democracy in other West European countries and North Americas. This panel strives to explore related questions in the case of postwar Germany by focusing on the relation between ‘democracy’ and ‘gender’ in the 20th century. Although ’gender’ has been an important category for the historiography of Weimar and also the Nazi Regime, surveys of West German history pay little attention to gender relations and gender norms. While the concept of liberal democracy appears to be gender-neutral, it incorporates a patriarchal narrative that marginalizes or even excludes women. After the Second World War, the focus on men as political actors and Nazi perpetrators on the one hand and protagonists of democracy on the other shaped society and politics in the early Federal Republic. This ‘patriarchal paradigm’ continues to shape the historiography of the period. However, in Germany too, the gender order was contested, as the heated controversies over the boundary between the public and the private as well as over voting rights and the political representation of women illustrate. Our panel seeks to explore these struggles and offers a new perspective on the history of West German democracy in which the category of gender is central. We will not only study the impact of heteronormativity as foundation of West German democracy, but also analyze gendered spaces of interaction – on the normative, discursive, and political level. By this, we seek to uncover the complex relation of democracy and gender and to discuss its implications for our understanding of postwar German history.
