Conflicting Interpretations In and Around Museums DESCRIPTION:Museums, from their bourgeois roots in the 19th century to the current day, have always had a broad social relevance. In recent years, to judge by record attendance of permanent and travelling historical exhibitions and the creation of new museums both through initiatives “from below” (history workshops, district museums, local history associations and memorials) and “from above” (private art museums, historical national museums), museums are if anything increasing in popularity. Yet, not least because of the controversies surrounding the so-called ‘Humboldt Forum’ – especially after Bénédicte Savoy’s resignation from the Advisory Board in summer 2017 – it is also clear that museums are controversial places. Battles over interpretation, disputes over how to use “old” objects to tell new stories, competing narratives about the past in terms of identity and collective memory reveal that museums also function as places where power relations are (re-)produced and (historically) legitimized. This panel explores the circumstances in which museums become sites of controversy, where representations, narratives, and interpretations are challenged, questioned, and viewed in a new light. Which discourses have remained constant and which have initiated social debates that have led to change? We explore these questions through a variety of historical and contemporary case studies, situating current criticism of ethnological museums in larger and more diverse contexts. Who are the critics? Under what circumstances do they enter, intervene or occupy the museum space? Ultimately, our presentations offer the opportunity to discuss the future of the museum. Can (Western) museums become places of exchange, negotiation and coexistence where social power relations are critically reflected and changed rather than reproduced? Or, is (and should) the future of the museum always going to be a controversial one? Der Beitrag Controversial Institutions.
