Provenance Research, its Subfields, and the Study of History DESCRIPTION:Provenance research has received increased public attention in recent years: In addition to reports on the discovery and restitution of works of art confiscated as a result of Nazi persecution, the return of colonial-era loot has been a major topic of discussion and debate in the media, not least against the background of the establishment of the Humboldt Forum in Berlin. The investigation of cultural property confiscations in the Soviet Occupation Zone/GDR has added a further field. In all sub-areas, provenance research aims at an appropriate handling of unlawfully confiscated cultural property, especially its restitution. The basis for this is research into the origin of the objects and the history of their ownership using historical sources. Although provenance research is a genuine historical topic insofar as it is concerned with the concrete redress of historical injustice, it has so far found little expression in historical scholarship. Additionally, it seems that there is only rarely an exchange between the individual branches of said research. This panel has therefore two goals: On the one hand, it seeks to bring the various fields of provenance research (colonialism, National Socialism, Soviet Occupation Zone/GDR) together and to discuss possible synergy effects, but also potential conflicts. On the other hand, the panel aims at introducing provenance research more thoroughly into the discipline of history in order to explore its potential for historical studies: What can historians learn from provenance research, but also what can they contribute to provenance research from their body of knowledge? Which forms of interplay exist and which ones would be desirable? To this end, the panel brings together specialists of provenance research from the fields of history, art history, ethnology, as well as from archives and museums. Der Beitrag Contested Mean(ing)s? Provenance Research, its Subfields, and the Study of History erschien zuerst auf Historikertag 2021. END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
