SUMMARY:[Historikertag 2021] Bodies and Markets: Controversies regarding the Treatment of Bodies and Human Life in Modern Market Economies
DESCRIPTION:Controversies regarding the relationship between human bodies and markets have a long history in modern market societies. Human life and bodies were long seen as a market taboo, an area where overt commercialization was not deemed socially acceptable. Especially at the beginning and the end of life, human bodies are often regarded as in need of special protection, and the legitimacy of market mechanisms is frequently challenged. The four papers in this panel will connect recent research on histories of the body with a cultural history of the economy and a resurgent interest in moral economies. Spanning from the late 19th to the early 20th century, the papers focus on 1. Birth: the rise of markets for reproductive medicine, 2. Youth: commercial promises of maintaining or restoring youthfulness and their critics, 3. Old Age: Debates around the growing market for professional long-term care in contrast to care as a familial obligation, 3. Death: controversies over the boundaries between piety and consumer sovereignty in funeral markets. The panel questions linear narratives of commercialization and focuses on the tensions between market-driven change and the mobilization of moral resources to challenge such transformations.
