DESCRIPTION:While Hadrian’s Wall, the Danewerk and the Berlin Wall can be seen as visible manifestations of borders in the landscape, borders also run through the minds of people as ideological dividing lines. Sovereignty of interpretation over these borders has not just dominated social discourse since the Brexit, the Crimean crisis or the conflicts around the Spratly Islands. In the event of a conflict, mostly due to changes in borders or affiliations, sometimes arguments and interpretations were used that derived their legitimacy from history, as in the case of China, which still bases its claims to ownership of the islands in the South China Sea on “historical rights”. Nevertheless, border changes also influence the identities of the people in the respective region. In the simultaneity of separation and connection as a zone of intensive exchange in the border areas, the question of characteristics of identification within these regions with changing affiliations arises. On the occasion of the remembrance of the change of the borders after the First World War in 2020, the three-hour section focuses on controversial border regions since the Middle Ages while using a regional approach. The strategies of legitimizing and the consequences for the identity of local populations and minorities are shown in five case studies.
