The Beutelsbach Consensus and its Impact for History Education DESCRIPTION:Freedom of opinion, openness and plurality of debates as well as the opportunity to compete for interpretations and to negotiate a compromise which is accepted by a majority are constitutive characteristics of democratic societies. Current debates concerning migration, antisemitism and the interpretation of NShistory are suggestive of an increasing lack of historical awareness and show that the willingness and the ability to deal with other positions and find a compromise in an open dialogue seem to get lost. History Education may contribute to face these problems because (1) it provides and reflects democratic values, (2) it sensitizes students to the complexity of historical phenomena and the variety of possible interpretations of the past and (3) it supports the ability of historical reasoning, which empowers learners to participate in public discourse about history. To fulfil this function, it is pedagogically reasonable and politically desired that history teachers are geared to the Beutelsbach Consensus: Banning means of overpowering students, treating controversial subjects as controversial and empowering learners to act politically can be understand as guidelines how to deal with conflicting interpretations about the past in school. Despite the importance of the consensus, a historyspecific discussion remains to be seen. The intention of this section is to start such a debate and to discuss what impact the principles of the consensus might have for teaching and learning history concerning the outlined social challenges.
