Conflicts about migration, about different types of mobility and their effects, have always been more than just conflicts about migration: They have served to negotiate conflicting ways of imagining nations, empires and societies. They were used to determine what a society, culture or political system should essentially be like and how the global mobility of people, goods, and cultural meanings related to these ideas. In their presentations, the speakers approach this interplay of migration and the self-description of societies by focussing on the changing semantics of integration and migration. They ask which semantics of integration, belonging and non-belonging came to be used at different times in different German-speaking countries, which policies they helped to implement, and which conflicts about the creation of a nation, society or community evolved within these countries and beyond their borders. From an interdisciplinary perspective, we will then discuss what historians and genealogical analyses can contribute to current debates on migration, migration societies and their conflicts.
