For Giorgio Agamben, on the other hand, contemporaneity relates to a historical and philosophical task: The contemporary becomes an untimely critic of his presence and the course of time to which he adheres through a disjunction and which he seeks to transform in an interpretative way. It is our concern to turn contemporaneity into a heuristic instrument of historical scholarship that can be deployede for the investigation of bygone presents. Therefore, our case studies tackle the changing frames of knowledge enclosing the contemporaries’ actions. Did the task of deconstructing one’s present in order to be able to diagnostically grasp it prove to be feasible at all? What strategies did contemporaries bring into play in the face of diagnostic polyphony or competition? On which resources did they draw in order to legitimize and disseminate their interpretations of time? Finally, the role of retrospective ascription needs to be examined. By evolving contemporaneity against the backdrop of historical scholarship, we would like to canvass a beneficial but overlooked figure of thought enabling the investigation of historico-philosophical and cultural-critical reflections.
