We are interpreting this narrative as a symptom of the erosion of a ‘national imaginary’: since around 1990, the national framing of politics, society, history, and culture has ceased to be self-evident. Politicians and commentators alike often blame the processes of globalisation for this development. This interpretation, however, fails to acknowledge that globalisation and the end of the nation state are not neutral observations of reality, but mutually reinforcing political and historical narratives. By looking at the debates surrounding its erosion, this panel therefore aims at historicising the national imaginary and its liberal political order. Individual and group identity, liberal democracy and historiography have been closely entwined by notions of the national. The panel will discuss these interconnections and explore how the erosion of the national imaginary affected historiography itself.
