And between both lies the Atlantic. While Veblen focusses on consumption of the American upper classes in the 1890s, Bourdieu considers French society in the late 1970s, expanding Veblen’s concept to develop a theory of society encompassing all classes. Beyond these differences, both authors draw a connection between social structure and lifestyle. Based on critical re-reading of Veblen and Bourdieu, the panel Conflicting interpretations of wealth in the 20 Century: “Distinction” within the “leisure class” focusses on case studies from across the world (USA, GDR, France, sub-Saharan Africa), to critically examine patterns of distinction within the upper classes, as well as more generally the renegotiation of social boundaries.
