SUMMARY:[Historikertag 2021] Topos, Anecdote, and Legend: Challenges in Interpreting Texts without Roots
DESCRIPTION:The section draws attention to a group of material known as “wandering texts”. These are miniature narratives and building blocks that are inserted into a historical narrative, lack a concrete author, have a high circulation potential and are always likely to be of a narrative or intertextual nature. In concrete terms, this means anecdotes, topoi, legends or rumours that occur in historiography both in the form of inserts and for the specification of information in the context of an argument. They often serve purposes of authentication, but can also develop an intrinsic value by filling in blanks, thus making the narrative more conceivable. All these forms of insertion pose problems for interpreters, both in the past and in the present, since their origin, truthfulness or authenticity are difficult to verify by the usual means of a philological-critical method. Despite the great incidence of wandering texts in ancient sources a contemporary methodological basis for their interpretation is therefore lacking. The one-sided concentration on the discursive use of wandering texts as well as their simplistic interpretation as an expression of historical fact is misguided and must therefore give way to a multi-perspective approach.
