Based on DNA sequences, large-scale designs address e.g. settlement dynamics of entire continents. Some labs focus on periods where both genetic data and archaeological and historical sources are available, such as the late Iron Age and the Early Middle Ages in Europe. The public is very interested particularly in the study of ancient DNA, i.e. DNA from archaeological sites. In the academic world, researchers from the humanities and natural sciences debate methodological and conceptual matters of principle. Much controversy arose around studies on the migration period and Anglo-Saxon times. Archaeologists and historians consider population dynamics as socio-cultural processes. They object to concepts of identity that are predominantly informed by biology. However; historians should not shy away from confrontation with genetics just because genetic studies appear too difficult to comprehend or too controversial to deal with. Rather they are best advised to take note of the methods and results and to engage in a constructive and critical discussion, bringing in their considerable expertise in using different sources and heuristics. Historiography is also predestined to argue against essentialisms of all kinds. Interdisciplinary cooperation can be very rewarding, as sequence analysis unlocks new epistemological resources. But how can we achieve a both open-minded and critical relationship? The section calls for a constructive approach to controversial methodological and theoretical questions. From the perspectives of medieval history, archaeology and genetics, the speakers will explore which conceptual prerequisites must be ensured in order to carry out mutually satisfactory cooperative research based on DNA sequences.
