Analogies and Distinctions between Animals and Humans in the 20th Century DESCRIPTION:In her history of primatology, Donna Haraway criticized attempts to deduce knowledge concerning human societies from the observation of primates, emphasizing the social construction of scientific knowledge. While the latter has become widely acknowledged even beyond the feministically inspired cultural studies, there are still primatologists, ethologists or biologists claiming to explain human behavior by means of animal observations. From its beginnings and institutionalization as an autonomous discipline in the 20th century, ethology has been accompanied by the question if and in how far its results can be transferred onto human beings and societies. In other disciplines and broader public discourses as well, comparisons between humans and animals have frequently functioned as a device to determine our specifically human identity. Starting from this observation, the panel will analyze more systematically, in which ways scientific knowledge derived from the observation of animals was used in order to explain human behavior or social processes. In particular, the presentations will deal with criminology, the use of ethological and biological arguments in childcare and animalistic interpretations of economic behavior. To supplement these analyses, a fourth paper will scrutinize how anthropological categories increasingly influenced knowledge about animals. Thus, in contrast to the currently expanding human-animal-studies, this interdisciplinary session takes different approach, asking for the changing interpretation of human beings and societies by means of animal analogies.
