Discourses of Peace in Antiquity DESCRIPTION:Both today and with reference to antiquity, peace is often considered an antithesis of war. Accordingly, peace is either treated as the opposing state-of-being to war or is regarded as a consequence and result of it. Beyond the binary structure of “war and peace”, “peace” also exists as a category of discourse within political power relations. The panel shifts the perspective to the analysis of peace as a category of discourse and interpretation that plays a significant part in the establishment, legitimization and challenging of power structures. Against this background, the contributions refer to different contexts (Israel, Mesopotamia, Greece, Roman Republic and Imperial Period), posing the question of who defined peace via which media and to what extent the latter was negotiable. The panel’s objective is to show that concepts of peace were anything but static constructs. The presentations will show how the dynamics of political and social processes are reflected in the discourse on peace and how the discourse in turn affected the renewal and modification of these processes.
