Contextual information in the form of metadata is therefore essential for understanding the surviving information. Archiving processes, such as evaluation and acquisition, structuring into indexing objects, migration processes, and online provision, also change the structure and view of the data. Genuinely electronic \"sources\" are thus fluid, variable, and available in multiple representations.<\/p>\n
This calls into question established parameters of historical scholarship. The concept of the \"original\" seems obsolete. Do we need new concepts and methods to certify the \"authenticity\" or \"genuineness\" of genuine digital documents? What competencies must be taught so that historians can critically evaluate genuinely electronic material and present it in data-based narratives?<\/p>\n
In the section \"The End of the Original?\" the challenges posed by genuinely electronic \"sources\" in archives and in historical research and teaching will be problematized and discussed in an exemplary manner. This panel is deliberately designed as a dialogue between archives and historical science.
