At the same time, societies produce figurations in which social experiences condense and which serve as "social figures" as a reference point for social understanding (Moebius/Schroer). Social figures are located in specific life worlds and are often the result of crisis experiences for which there are no clear (institutionalized) answers yet. Accordingly, social figures express problem situations without solving them. Sociologists have already discussed the epistemic achievements of social figures as a special form of representation of the social in contemporary societies (Moser/Schlechtriemen). The lectures aim to build on this and to expand the analytical potential of this observation with a historical perspective. Accordingly, social figures are not viewed as a state, but as a process and the lectures ask in which social contexts specific social figures arose (and possibly disappeared) and how they developed over the course of the 20th century. Using the examples of the "addict", the "follower", the "victim", the "model woman" and the "dependent person", the panel asks about the genesis and temporal nature of specific social figures that became dominant in Western societies in the 20th century, often also transnationally. In particular, it examines to what extent social figures expressed certain experiences, body images and imaginations, but also justified concrete power effects such as inclusion and exclusion mechanisms. Finally, the discussion should address how social figures generated evidence and where the limits of their analytical potential lie.
