SUMMARY:[Historikertag 2023] New Times, Different Orders. On the Rearrangement of the Past in Political Changes
DESCRIPTION:Political ruptures and so-called turning points are accompanied by reassessments. At the moment of a "turning point," the gaze is directed toward the future in the interest of exploring new horizons of expectation and room for manoeuvre; on the other hand, political actors use situations of upheaval to revalue the past and to overturn supposed realities. The spectrum of reorganizations, of which there are numerous examples in the modern and recent history of Central and Eastern Europe, ranges from the legitimization of rule to the delegitimization of rule through the development of politically subversive practices. What these attempts at reorganization have in common is that they seek their material in the past or in the historical narratives that have prevailed to date. The section contributions are dedicated to this event-induced questioning of historical facts.
With comparative intentions, the speakers of the section present case studies of the revaluation, reorientation and reordering of historical facts. They will ask about the real types of palimpsests, as well as historical-political turns that illustrate the fragility of historical facts. The lectures touch on the transformation of legal, social and political orders and focus on the space between the Oder and the Vistula.
