In the Soviet Union, they faced two particular challenges: The totalitarian regime always perceived independent civil initiatives as a threat to the state's claim to control. Furthermore, the Soviet Union's foreign and domestic policy maxims changed several times in the course of the 1940s, affecting the state's understanding of justice, injustice, and the need to come to terms with the Holocaust. This varied depending on Stalin's positioning and interests in the global political context, as well as between the center and the periphery of the Soviet Union. Recent research has demonstrated that Jewish initiatives carried out numerous activities of documentation and condemnation of Nazi crimes, which were also supported by the state. The section will explore the tensions arising from these aspects between Jewish efforts to clarify and prosecute the perpetrators and their collaborators on the one hand, and the imponderable state framework on the other. Starting from important commissions, trials, and writings, the lectures will analyze central legal and socio-political aspects that made it possible, determined, and limited Jewish confrontation with National Socialism in the Soviet Union. In this way, the ambivalence that had to be balanced out in any confrontation with the topic of war and the politics of extermination in the Soviet Union will come to the fore. The aim is to demonstrate the disruption of Soviet Jewish life in this specific period and to describe the flexible spheres of influence of individual actors at the interface of totalitarian forms and constantly changing political alliances.
