DESCRIPTION:The current discussions about 'fake news' have once again highlighted the media dimension of the social construction of reality. The media history of pre-modern epochs invites us to detach these discussions from a purely technological perspective and to ask about the social context of media use. The Rome of the Middle Republic is an exciting case in point. In this period, accelerated military expansion in the Mediterranean region was combined with a veritable media revolution. Not only did an independent Latin literature emerge, but also architecture and art were used as media in a new way by the political actors. The expansion intensified the reception of Hellenistic culture. At the same time, there was an increased need to represent and remember what was happening on the periphery in the center, Rome. The resulting productions of imperium were fundamentally fragile because they rarely went unchallenged in political competition. However, this fragility of media self-portrayals during the middle republic is often only apparent to today's observer at second glance because important sources at this time are part of a retrospective construction of the past during the early imperial period. In four case studies, focusing on different media and genres, the section discusses central questions that arise from this finding. These include the techniques and interpretive leeway used by the actors, but also the social rules of self-dramatization and the media-specific risks to which they exposed themselves. These questions touch on basic problems of source criticism in media culture studies. In this respect, the section also aims to stimulate critical reflection on this core methodological competence of the historical discipline.
