DESCRIPTION:Many ancient prose texts claim to represent real historical circumstances and events. However, such an endeavor did not preclude authors from incorporating their own views or reworking the presentation of certain events. Such adjustments were considered legitimate and had various reasons. Older information could be taken up to satisfy readers' expectations, fictionalizations could serve to increase entertainment value. Changes could also be used to support the core narrative or follow a current political development. Although the approach to historical and factual representations changed over the course of antiquity, the loose handling of facticity persisted. This section will focus on some works from the early to high Roman imperial period. The concentration on this period allows for a better highlighting of the diversity of aspects of factual manipulation. The section is introduced by an examination of rhetoric, which significantly influenced historiographic practice. Four case studies follow, in which different text genres are examined, namely the myths on Romulus, Sueton's Emperor's Vitae, the historical novel in the imperial period and the historical work of Appian. All texts have in common that they describe historical facts as facts and connect them in different ways, embellish or even manipulate them. No text comes without interventions and additions by the author, which makes the identification and interpretation of facts difficult. In antiquity, this problem was not theorized, which resulted in a methodological deficit in dealing with facts. The section aims to illustrate some specific problems in order to exemplify the limits of identifying historical facts.
